Why Is Family Terror (
Domestic Violence)
Not Treated As A Crime?
The biggest
reason that domestic
violence against women is not treated as a crime is because we women
don't demand it.
The
people at the shelter that
I fled to for protecton never encouraged me to entertain the
possibility. The law enforcement officers that came to my
aide
never reacted in a manner that told me that a crime had been committed
against me. The attorney that I went to file a civil case
against
my abuser never suggested the possibility of criminal
charges existed.
I had two
witnesses to two seperate
beatings, two doctors visits for medical treatment from my injuries
from the beatings, and multiple witness to repeated injuries and the
abuser's testimony under oath saying "he only
beat me when I deserved it" in the civil case and a criminal case was
never discussed even though I had all this evidence.
Even the civil
case that I filed was
not handled in the same manner as other cases. I believe this
is
because a domestic violence case was not wanted in the court system.
After all, how could men prosecute or side against a man with
a woman concerning what has gone on in his personal home?
This is
the only logical reason that I can imagine; as every piece to the
puzzle
for a cirminal case was available and ignored. It is my
opinion
that this is a common trait of the legal system for domestic violence
against women cases. When I talked to many resources looking
for
help, I was told that here in Kansas we just don't do much criminally
against men who deliberately injure women with violence. I
was
told that maybe by the time our baby daughters are grown, it might be
a possibility that the laws will protect them from these types
of
criminals.
